Setting the Xbox One to 1080p even on a 1080p monitor can actually end up. Don't let the deciding factor of the console you choose be a few pixels. Actually if the monitor is 720p, you should set it to the actual resolution of the monitor, which is probably 1366 x 768. If you want the best graphics, skip these consoles and build yourself a powerful gaming PC. 2 level 1 skarklaw skarklaw 7 years ago dont go by what we say, go by your eyes. Now if you were using a pc then yes the 1080 would look better. That will determine what looks better IMO over 720/1080 etc with consoles. Occasionally, games run at lower-than-720p resolutions internally more in the PS3 and Xbox 360’s early days as developers grappled with optimizing multi-platform versions of their game engines. Because both machines are powerful and can make a game look exceptionally high quality, the matchup between these two consoles comes down to cost, features, and where your friends play. One might look better than the other because of it being a better tv. Most games on the PS3 and Xbox 360 run at 720p, or 1280 x 720 pixels, and upscale if your television is 1080p native. Opened up my xbox one, hdmi connector was good so no need to replace that. Tried different cables different tv ports.

When I then try to switch to 720p or 1080p it just turns back to 640p. Only 640p when in the 'emergency' turn on mode. While the PS4 has an advantage on graphical quality in this first wave of games, it doesn't tell the whole tale. My xbox one just doesn't put out any hdmi signal.

In the end, they deemed the PS4 version to be slightly better, but the Xbox One puts in a great showing because the scaler does a good job of putting out a good 1080p video, while the PS4 does not. The good people of Digital Foundry did a comparison between the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Battlefield 4, which are running at 900p and 720p respectively. Making that divide even narrower when you are sitting eight feet away on the couch. 640×480 resolution on a system meant to display in HD looks terrible and it makes the Xbox One look worse than the Xbox 360. Because of this, some of the difference in quality between the two console version can be made up. Unfortunately, many TVs don’t accept either 1080p or 720p, so without 1080i output the Xbox One is forced into standard definition 640×480, which by Microsoft’s own admission is not recommended.

A good scaler won't just blow up the source, it will also do some post-processing runs and clean up the output video.
